Presented by Ruth Manning, 1962.
The painting has been attributed to J.M. Davis (fl. 1800-1840), a prolific painter who frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy. This is based on the fact that a portrait of Manning was exhibited at the RA in 1821, and this is the only painting known to have existed at that time.
The painting was probably made between 1805 and 1807.
The RAS also holds a large collection of Manning’s letters and papers.
