Palm leaf; 10 or 11 lines on each folio; wooden boards. Manuscript consists of the text of the Nātya-śāstra by Bharata. Inscription on last folio (by C. M. Whish?): “The Bharatīyam; a nātya sāstram, or work on the ancient indian Drama including the stage, dancing, music, acting etc an extraordinary work. 36 chapters 212 pages”; inscription on label pasted on board: “Bharata’s natyasastram”. Additional inscription on another label on board: “In old catalogue No 167. Not included in CMW[?] MW[?] Catalogue”. South Indian Sanskrit / Whish Manuscript Collection. This manuscript is labelled as Whish 226, but in ’A catalogue of South Indian Sanskrit manuscripts (especially those of the Whish Collection) belonging to the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland’ by M. Winternitz, with an appendix by F. W. Thomas (London: RAS, 1902), the Whish MS numbers only go up to 195, and then other manuscripts are numbered from 196 to 215.
