Design for a game of Snakes and Ladders, probably by an Ajmer artist, ca. 1810 CE.
From the collection of Major-General John Staples Harriott. Inscribed in Harriott’s hand: Gyan Chapar – a game played with dice – in Northern Hindustan. No. 22.
Each square is inscribed in Persian characters with the qualities each one possesses.
Pen-and-ink: 55 x 45 cm.
