[RAS Raffles Java 41] Kitab Brama and Misa Cankramo
ca. 1800?
Javanese
21.5 x 13 cm
Consists of two unrelated parts. First, as noted on the flyleaf, is Kitab Brama and Misa Cangkramo (pp.1-69); another is a Malay text on astrology written in Jawi (pp.70-79). The MS is bound in the same style of European binding as other Raffles Java manuscripts. On the first pp.1-60 the text is written horizontally, in parallel with the length of the paper, which may be echoing the layout of writing on the palm leaves (Rahardjo 2018:14). On the f.4r a note reads “Presented to the ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY by Lady Raffles Jan 16, 1830.” The opening pages (f.4v-5.r) are illuminated with floral motif in the palette colours red, blue, yellow, golden colour, green, and dark green (Ricklefs, Voorhoeve & Gallop 2014:83; Drewes 1977:199).
