Biographical history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

In 1933, the Finnish Oriental Society celebrated its 50th anniversary. Connected to this are:
* "Finno-Ugrian Society" - a printed invitation to send a representative to the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Society on 2 December 1933. Printed in Finnish, English, French and German.
* Letter from Gerard Clauson to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, apologising for delaying his reply. He suggest that Tallqvist at Helsinki, Konow of Oslo or Karlgren of Goteborg might represent the Society if they are going. Handwritten, dated 25 November 1933.
* Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Sir Edward Maclagan to ask him to sign the enclosed and send by return of post. Handwritten with printed letterhead, dated 27 November 1933.
* Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Professor K.L. Tallqvist to ask that if he is going to the fiftieth anniversary celebrations would he be able to represent the Royal Asiatic Society. Typed, dated 27 November 1933.
* Letter from Professor K.L. Tallqvist to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that his letter unfortunately had arrived after the celebrations but he has forwarded the Royal Asiatic Society's compliments to the Finno-Ougrian Society. Typed, dated 6 December 1933.
