Biographical history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

The Council Minutes for 20 May 1937 record that a Library catalogue and Standing Editorial Committee was established which first met on 27 May 1937. The signed Minutes for that meeting are within the Council Minutes Book as are the signed minutes for 4 November 1937, 20 January 1938 and unsigned minutes for 12 May 1938. Though there is further mention of the Library catalogue in Council Minutes, there are no further Library Committee Minutes.
