Biographical history

Sir Hamilton Alexander Rosskeen Gibb was a Scottish historian on Orientalism, teaching first at the School of Oriental Studies, London, and subsequently at the University of Oxford before moving to Harvard University in 1955. He was a trustee of the Gibb Memorial Trust.

In the Council Minutes for 13 June 1968 it is recorded that the Selection Committee of the Director, the Honorary Secretary and Professor E. Ullendorff, was approved by the Council and in the Minutes of 10 October 1968, the selection of Sir Hamilton Gibb was approved and that the President would approach Sir Hamilton Gibb regarding accepting and presentation of the Medal. This was also recorded in the Report of the Anniversary General Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1969, p.199.
