Biographical history

Ernest Julius Walter Simon was born in Berlin in 1893, being educated at the University of Berlin, and lived there until 1934 when he moved to London. He worked in both London and Berlin as a Lecturer and Professor in Chinese and was expert in Chinese and Tibetan linguistics.

In the Minutes of the Council for 14 October 1976, it was recorded that the President nominated Professor C. Bayden, Dr. A. Kunst and Dr. S.A. Skilliter as the Selection Committee for the Gold Medal, and in the Minutes for 9 December 1976, it was recorded that Professor Walter Simon was nominated and approved as the recipient of the Gold Medal and that he would be invited to lecture on the occasion of its presentation on October 1977 or at the Anniversary General Meeting. In the Report of the Anniversary General Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1978, p.204 it was recorded that the Triennial Gold Medal was awarded to Professor Walter Simon for his distinguished services to Oriental research, at the General Meeting on 13 October 1977.
