Biographical history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

It appears that the Library Committee was not active at this time. However there are several letters concerning the oversight of the Library. These are:
* Letter from Anthony Bennell to B.C. Bloomfield to include a draft to restimulate the Library Policy Committee. Typed letter with Draft Note from Director, Royal Asiatic Society to Honorary Librarian, dated 21 July 1981.
* Letter from B C Bloomfield to Anthony Bennell in which he gives his priorities for the Society's care of its collections. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 27 July 1981.
* "A Note from the Hon. Librarian" Report by Simon Digby on the Collections of the Society and possible projects for their care. Typed, undated.
* "Draft Note by the Director" concerning the collections and use of the Library. Typed, undated.
* Letter from Director to Honorary Librarian addressing some of the issues in relation to the Library. Typed, dated 11 September 1981.
* Letter from Selkirk to Anthony Bennell regarding government assistance with the Collections. Typed with handwritten annotations, dated 11 November 1981.
