Biographical history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

The Library Committee was still in abeyance but there are several items connected with Library governance:
* "Meeting of the Council, 1 April 1982" - report by Dr. M.A.N. Loewe on "The Role of the Royal Asiatic Society" which was circulated for this meeting and concerns the Collections. Typed.
* Letter from G.R. Smith to Miss Gibson, Secretary Royal Asiatic Society, to give his opinion on Dr. Loewe's report. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 19 March 1982
* Letter from B.C. Bloomfield to Anthony Bennell to give his opinion on Dr Loewe's report and to offer his services for a Library Committee. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 23 March 1982.
* RAS Library Committee: List of Periodical for Consideration, 24 September1982. Typed list.

The Council Minutes for 1 April 1982 record that the Report by Dr. Loewe was considered and that the Library Committee were asked to consider the future of the Library and report back to the Council in November,. The Minutes for 17 June 1982 record that the Report of the Library Committee was adopted and that the Committee had weeded out 250-300 superfluous books to be sold to raise money for the Society. The Council Minutes for 21 October also records decision concerning the Collections regarding disposal, conservation and funding. The Minutes for 10 December 1982 records that the Report of the Library Committee concerned disposal of books, funding and listing of the Collections.
