Biographical history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content

Correspondence, reports and statements produced in the administration of the Forlong Fund from 2001. Many of these are still active records. The ones that have become archival are listed below: __2002__ * Letter from Jean E. Tullett, Scholarships Officer, SOAS, to Professor Anthony J. Stockwell, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to introduce herself as the new incumbent with charge of organising the scholarship for the Forlong Fund. Typed with handwritten annotations, 1 piece, dated 12 November 2002. * Letter from Anthony Stockwell to Jean E. Tullett to inform that Dr Giles Tillotson, the Society's previous Director had reached an arrangement with Professor David Arnold whereby SOAS surrendered its interest and responsibility for the Forlong Award. Typed, 1 piece, dated 15 November 2002. __2017__ * Application for Forlong Fund funding for the production of a printed catalogue for 'Digitalising the Sikkim Palace Archives (1875-1975)'. Computer printed, 5 pieces, dated 28 September 2017.
