Biographical history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content

These certificates of recommendation are forms submitted by candidates who were desirous of becoming a member of the Society for membership application, listing their personal details (name, occupation and address) and the names and addresses of the proposer and seconder. Printed on the reverse of the form is notes and rules relating to membership and subscriptions. Sometimes a candidate’s form was filed with correspondence notifying their successful election and their 'Form A', signed by the member after their election to confirm that they agree to observe and comply with the membership rules, and that they will promote the interests and welfare of the Society.

System of arrangement

The certificates are roughly arranged by year into folders. Not all certificates are dated so the arrangement should not be treated as precise.
