Biographical history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence regarding the bequest of Dr Herbert Chatley of books related to Chinese matters. Four Letters:
* Letter from the Sub-Manager, Lloyds Bank Limited, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform of the bequest. Typed with printed letterhead, 1 piece, 1 side, dated 31 January 1955.
* Letter from Mrs M Davis, Secretary Royal Asiatic Society, to the Sub-Manager, Lloyds Bank, to thank him for the information and to ask if the books could be brought by carrier to the Society. Typed, 1 piece, 1 side, dated 1 February 1955.
* Letter from the Sub-Manager, Lloyds Bank Limited, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to give information regarding the dispatch of the books. Typed with printed letterhead, 1 piece, 1 side, dated 12 February 1955.
* Letter from J.H.P. Pafford, Goldsmiths' Librarian, University of London Library, to Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that the books forming the Chatley bequest were now in his possession. Typed with printed letterhead, 1 piece, 1 side, dated 14 April 1955.
