Biographical history

Edward Walter Hutchinson served as a British Vice-Consul in Saigon, Vietnam and as British Consul in Chiengmai, Thailand. Hutchinson is the author of _Adventurers in Siam in the Seventeenth Century_ published in 1940. He is also known for his annotated translation of the _Mémoire du Père de Bèze_ , which was published in 1968 under the title _1688 Revolution in Siam_ .

This book contains extracts from the book titled _L'histoire universelle des missions catho liques_ , II, published in 1957. These include chapters written by Henri Bernard-Maitre under the titles: "Le père Ricci et les missions de Chine"; "Le père de nobili et les missions de l'Inde", "Les Missions de Chines Après 1644"; "La rencontre du padroado et du patronato: l'affrontement des méthodes"; and "Les réactions européennes a l'ouvre missionaire". A chapter written by E. Jarry under the title "La querelles des rites" is also included.
