Biographical history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content

In the Annual General Meeting on 12 May 1932, the Council passed a resolution that the Ambassador or Minister of every Oriental Power accredited to the Court of St. James' should be invited to become a Foreign Extraordinary Member of the Society, under the terms of Rule 10 of the Charter, which stipulated that ‘Foreign potentates or distinguished officials of Oriental Powers may be admitted by the Council to be Foreign Extraordinary Members’. This sub-series contains the invitation letters sent to these individuals and further correspondence relating to the election of Foreign Extraordinary Members.
