Biographical history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content

Between 2006 and 2011, a Fundraising Group or Committee was in place to raise funds for the Society. The material in this series consists of: * Minutes for Meeting of the Fundraising Group or Committee between 18 September 2006 and 9 June 2011. * Fundraising brochures: a colour brochure entitled 'Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland' with accompanying leaflet 'How can you contribute to the Future of the Royal Asiatic Society', 2 copies of each. * Printed card listing Members of Council 2008-2009, Members of the Fund Raising Committee and Members of Staff.
