Biographical history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content
In the Council meeting on 10 April 1957 it was agreed that the Society would transfer on 'permanent loan' to the Victoria and Albert Museum, some of the paintings from its collections, including 74 Indian miniatures and one packet of 14 small architectural sketches. Further resolution on 8 April 1965 ruled that a volume of Indian Miniatures presented to the Society by Mr Nadir Baxter in 1826 be offered on indefinite loan to the V&A. These were primarily Indian miniature paintings from the Collections of James Tod and Nadir Baxter. These have subsequently been returned to the Society. The material in this subseries contains correspondence and documentation concerning the loan.
