Biographical history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from Christopher C. F. Naylor enquiring whether the Society has the original of the portrait of his great-great-grandfather (Henry Thomas Colebrooke) that he inherited from the family. With copy outgoing letter from the Society replying to him, and a further letter from Naylor stating that he has been shown the bust of Colebrooke in the Society and his wish to apply for membership for himself, as well as giving details of his professional undertakings in the field of Sino-British trade, dated 5 February-9 March 1994.
