Biographical history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content
Responses from the 1989 membership survey prompted the Society's decision to produce a newsletter to give its members a regular update of its recent activities. This was intended as a mean of membership engagement, particularly with those living outside of London or abroad. The first issue was published in February 1989, and presumably five more issues followed from 1989 to 1990. In 2003, the Society started a new series of newsletters, which were published twice a year.
The issues present in this sub-series are:
* No. 1, 22 February 1989
* No. 4, July 1990
* Winter 2003 (3 copies)
* Summer 2004 (4 copies)
* Winter 2005 (3 copies)
* Winter 2006 (3 copies)
* Summer 2007 (3 copies)
* Spring 2008 (6 copies)
* Summer 2009 (3 copies)
* Autumn 2010 (3 copies)
Also kept in this folder are drafts of and some reference material for the newsletters.
