Biographical history
Christopher Gimson joined the Indian Civil Service in 1911 and spent most of his career in Manipur, India, eventually becoming Political Agent there in 1933. He retired in 1947 and returned to Leicester, where he died in 1975. He was president of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society 1955–56.

Biographical history
Diana Crawford was appointed Secretary and Librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1963. She retired in 1977 and was elected a Fellow honoris causa of the Society in 1978.

Archival history
These papers were originally stored with the uncatalogued correspondence between the Society and William Pettigrew and others relating to the publication of a work on early Manipuri by Yumjao Singh. It was decided to catalogue these separately as personal papers as they relate to Gimson's personal interest.
