[South Indian Sanskrit MS 021, Whish MS 20] Śatarudriya

Manuscript consists of 3 texts: 1. Caraṇavyūha (f.1-4); 2. the beginning of a commentary on the Śatarudriya, or Rudrādhyāya (Taittirīya Saṃhitā iv, 5) (f.5-7); 3. Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanisad or Śatapathabrāhmaṇa Upaniṣad (Kāṇva Śākhā) (f.8-96).

The Caraṇavyūha begins: athāthaś caraṇavyūhaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ tatra yad uktāñ cāturvedyāñ catvāro vedā jñātā bhavanti | ṛgvedo yajurvedas sāmavedotharvaveda(ś) ceti | tatra ṛgvedasya sapta bhedā bhavanti | etc.

It ends: yodhīte caraṇavyūhaṃ sa vipraḥ paṅktipāvanaḥ | tārayaty akhilān pūrvān puruṣān sapta sapta ca | yo nāmāni purā devā amṛtatvāñ ca gacchati | lokātītam mahāśāntim amṛtatvañ ca gacchati | amṛtatvāñ ca gacchaty on nama ity āha bhagavān Vyāsaḥ Pārāśaryyo Vyāsaḥ || vāsudevasvarūpāya vivasvatbiṃbatejase | vedovaṃśāvadaṃśāya Vedavyāsāya te namaḥ || śrīgurucaraṇāravindābhyān namaḥ || śrībṛhaspataye namaḥ ||

Text of the commentary on the Śatarudriya begins: on namo rudrāya rudrāṇāṃ vyākhyāṃ vakṣyāmi yajjape | mokṣāghakṣayasālokyavyādhināśaṃ prayojanaṃ | atha jābālopaniṣat | atha hainaṃ brahmacāriṇa ūcuḥ kiñjapyenāmṛtatvaṃ brūhīti | sa hovāca Yājñavalkyaḥ śatarudrīyeṇeti | etc.

It ends: uktaṃ vāyavye | rogavān paredaṃ paretya rudrajāpañ cared iti | yajñasūktaḥ kalpaḥ | śatarudrā devatā asyeti śatarudryam ucyate || hariḥ oṃ | śubham astu

Text of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad begins: oṃ śrīgaṇapataye namaḥ | on namo brahmādibhyo brahmavidyāsaṃpradāyakarttṛbhyo vaṃśaṛṣibhyo namo gurubhyaḥ | śrīmad-Yājñavalkyagurubhyo namaḥ | hariḥ om | o nuṃ uṣā vā aśvasya meddhyasya śiras sūryyaś cakṣur vātaḥ, etc.

F.23 iti vājasaneyāntargata-Kāṇvīye śuklayajurvede bṛhadāraṇyake saptadaśakāṇḍe prathamoddyāyaḥ || Between the first and second Adhyāyas a description of the Pañcagavyavidhi is inserted (f.23).

The 3rd Adhyāya begins f.37, the 4th at f.54, the 5th at f.74 and the 6th at f.82.

Text ends: o nuṃ iti vājasaneyāntaragata-Kāṇvīye śuklayajurvede śatapathabrāhmaṇe upatiṣṭhatsaptadaśakāṇḍe ṣaṣṭhoddhyāyas samāptaḥ || hariḥ | oṃ | śubham astu śrīrāmacandrāya namaḥ || ekapāc ca haviryyajña uddhārīty addhvaragrahau | vājapeyo rājasūya ukhāsaṃbharaṇan tathā | hastī ghaṭaś citiś caiva sāntīty agnirahasyakau | aṣṭādhyāyī maddhyamaś cā aśvamedhaḥ pravargyakaḥ | bṛhadāraṇyakañ ceti kāṇḍās saptadaśa kramāt || oṃ oṃ oṃ | paraguṇaparadānaprastutāśeṣakṛtyā nijaguṇakalikābhir llokam āmodayantaḥ | aviditaparadoṣā jñānapīyūṣapūrṇāḥ karakṛtam aparādhaṃ kṣantum arhanti santaḥ || śrīgurubhyo namaḥ ||

Winternitz notes that there are entries by C M Whish (e.g. on recto of first (blank) folio, on f.7a and f.96a) which are dated ‘Calicut 1826′. The MS. is probably not much older.’
